Privacy Policy

Peekabug helps you photograph a bug, identify it, and build a personal collection. We built the app to collect as little data as possible. This policy explains what happens to your information.

The short version

Accounts are optional. Without one, your collection lives only on your device. If you create one, it syncs to our backend so you do not lose it when you switch or reinstall.
When you scan a bug, the photo is sent to our AI provider to identify it. That is the one time your photo leaves your device. We keep no copy.
Location is optional and only ever approximate (city-level). Bug Brief uses the map position or place you choose, not a precise track of where you are.
We do not sell your data, show ads, or use your data for advertising.
You can delete your account and all synced data any time, from inside the app.

What we collect and why

Bug photos (when you scan). Your photo is sent to our AI provider (Moonshot AI, "Kimi") to recognise the bug and generate its facts. The photo and the result are then saved locally on your device. We keep no copy on our own servers. Our server is a lightweight proxy that forwards the request and holds our API keys.

Web bug identifier (peekabug.com/identify). When you upload a photo on our website, it is resized in your browser, sent over HTTPS to our proxy and forwarded to the same AI provider to be identified. We keep neither the photo nor the result. To enforce the free daily limit, our proxy stores a hashed daily counter derived from your network address (never the address itself), deleted after two days. The number of scans you have used today is kept in your browser's local storage.

Ask Peeka questions. The text of your question, and the name of the bug it is about, are sent to the same AI provider to produce an answer.

Approximate location (optional). If enabled, we use your city-level location to record where, in what weather, and season you made a discovery, to show your local Bug Brief, and to set the sky over your Bug Hotel. Coordinates are rounded. We never collect precise or background location. Stored locally; you can turn it off any time in Settings.

Weather. When location is enabled, approximate coordinates are sent to Open-Meteo to fetch current weather.

Bug Brief. The place or approximate coordinates you choose on the map, and a month, are sent through our proxy to iNaturalist to fetch species counts and licensed photos. No account identifier or personal data is included. Our proxy caches these results (by place and month, never by person) for up to seven days.

Place search. Text you type in the map search is handled by Apple Maps on your device when your device language matches the app language, and otherwise by iNaturalist's place search through our proxy.

Your collection and progress. Cards, hotel guests, XP, badges, saved trips and settings are stored on your device. Without an account they stay only there.

Account (optional). If you create an account, we store your email address and sync your collection and progress to our backend (Supabase) so they follow you across devices, protected by per-user row-level security. Delete it any time from Profile → Settings → Account & sync → Delete account.

Purchases. Peeka Pro is sold through the App Store. RevenueCat receives an anonymous app user id and the purchase receipt from Apple to confirm your subscription. We never see your payment details.

Notifications (optional). Reminders such as a saved trip's month starting are scheduled locally on your device. We do not run a push server.

What we do NOT collect

No password beyond what your sign-in method requires; no contacts, no photo library access beyond the photo you choose to scan.
No advertising identifiers, no third-party analytics SDKs, no cross-app tracking.
No precise or background location.

Service providers

Moonshot AI (Kimi): receives your scan photo and question text to return a result. Their servers may be located in China.
iNaturalist: receives a place or approximate coordinates and a month for Bug Brief. No personal identifiers.
Open-Meteo: receives approximate coordinates for weather. No personal identifiers.
Apple: Maps, place search, the App Store and subscriptions, under Apple's own privacy policy.
Cloudflare: runs our request proxy and hosts this website; standard request logs.
Supabase: if you sign in, stores your email and synced collection with per-user row-level security.
RevenueCat: subscription status, keyed by an anonymous app user id.

Requests are sent over encrypted (HTTPS) connections. A plain-language summary of each provider is on our data sources page.

Children

Peekabug is intended for a general audience of all ages and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Accounts are optional, and the only personal identifier an account holds is an email address. If you believe a child has created an account or provided information you would like removed, contact us or use the in-app account deletion.

Data retention

On-device data remains until you delete it in the app or uninstall Peekabug. If you have an account, your synced data is kept until you delete your account. Our AI and weather providers process each request to return a result. Bug Brief caches on our proxy hold species counts for a place and month, not anything about you, and expire within seven days.

Your choices

Turn location or notifications off any time in the app's settings or in iOS Settings.
Delete your account and all synced data in the app: Profile → Settings → Account & sync → Delete account.
Delete on-device data by uninstalling the app.

Changes

If we change this policy, we will update the date above and, for material changes, note it in the app.
